DTES

April 18, 2014
BC Rehab has partnered up with Union Gospel Mission and Wheelin’ Mobility to present a mobile wheelchair and equipment repair service in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES) and the feedback has been amazing.

To date BC Rehab has presented the service at four separate community events:

  • Union Gospel Mission’s Summer Connect
  • Concert Properties Summer BBQ at Oppenheimer Park
  • Carnegie Alley Health Fair
  • Homelessness Connect at Vancouver Community College

We have actively been working with service providers in the DTES to ensure that the people who really need this service come out to our events. The goal of the program is simple: to provide technical repairs to wheelchairs and other mobility aids used by people with physical disabilities who are struggling and have no other means of getting the work done. The outcome for clients is enhanced mobility and personal independence now that their previously non-functional equipment is wheeling and rolling the way it was intended to operate.

To give you a sense of the impact of this service, here is a quote from the Homelessness Action Week event coordinator, Damien Murphy:

“This mobile repair service has been an invaluable addition to the line up of more than fifty service providers who come out to Homelessness Action Week each year to provide action oriented services to those who are homeless, at-risk of homelessness or just having a hard time. It’s awesome to see the team of mechanics work tirelessly all day to make sure people can get around whether in a wheelchair, scooter or even a walker that just need a little TLC to get them up and running in tip top shape. Now that BC Rehab has gotten involved on an ongoing basis it is good to know they will continue to be at important community events.”
